Nirvana

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nirvana by saxophonist Charles Lloyd was mostly recorded in 1965, but Columbia did not release it until 1968. The record is therefore a collection of sessions from different years. Island Blues, Carcara, Long Time, Baby, Love Theme from In Harm's Way and Sun Dance come from October 1965, with Gábor Szabó on guitar, Albert Stinson on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. East of the Sun and You Know are older, with Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

The closing piece One for Joan/Freedom Traveler lasts almost fifteen minutes and was recorded as early as 1962, with trombonist Garnett Brown and drummer Chico Hamilton. It had previously appeared on Hamilton's album Drumfusion. Love Theme from In Harm's Way was written by Jerry Goldsmith. On the record Lloyd plays tenor saxophone and flute.
