Jerry Goldsmith

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jerry Goldsmith was born in 1929 in Los Angeles and was taught by Miklós Rózsa. He began in radio and television at CBS. In the 1960s he brought modernist techniques to Hollywood. For Freud (1962) and Planet of the Apes (1968) he used twelve-tone rows, unusual percussion and playing techniques such as blowing through horns without the mouthpiece. Chinatown (1974) was given a melancholy solo trumpet. For The Omen (1976) he wrote a chorus with a Latin text and won his only Oscar. Alien (1979) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) followed. Goldsmith wrote in almost every genre and kept searching for new sounds until his death in 2004.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the angular rhythms and unusual sounds of the percussion and brass, and compare them with the warm, lonely trumpet of Chinatown.
