The Omen

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Omen is the soundtrack of the 1976 film of the same name, directed by Richard Donner. Jerry Goldsmith was paid 25,000 dollars for the music and at first did not really know what to do. One evening he told his wife Carol that he was hearing voices. That became the starting point: a score with a great deal of choir and an ominous Latin chant, unlike his usual style. The National Philharmonic Orchestra played under the direction of Lionel Newman.

For the theme song Ave Satani, the composer created a kind of satanic Gregorian chant, with reversed Latin phrases from the Mass. Critics praised the score. He won his only Oscar for best original score, after eight earlier nominations. Ave Satani was also nominated for best original song.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ave Satani and notice the choir: it sings Latin phrases constructed like a reversed Mass.
