Thom Yorke

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Thom Yorke was born in 1968 in Wellingborough. In 1985 at Abingdon School he started, with schoolmates, the band that later became Radiohead. He wrote his first film score for Suspiria (2018), Luca Guadagnino's new version of the 1977 horror film. Yorke deliberately chose not to refer to Goblin's music for the original film. He drew inspiration from the soundtrack of Blade Runner, from the musique concrète of Pierre Henry and from krautrock from the Berlin of 1977, where the film is set. The London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir play and sing along. The piano song Suspirium was nominated for a Grammy. Later he wrote the music for the Italian film Confidenza (2024).

Listening

Listening tip. In Suspirium, listen to the waltzing piano accompaniment and Yorke's high, soft voice, and elsewhere to choir and electronics slowly swelling ominously.
