Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka) · Volker Bertelmann was born in 1966 in Kreuztal and grew up in Ferndorf. He discovered the piano at the age of eight in church and had ten years of classical piano lessons. At first he studied medicine and business administration in Cologne. From 1992 he worked as a musician. Under the name Hauschka he makes music for prepared piano: between the strings he places leather, felt, rubber and other materials. This gives the piano a different, sometimes percussive sound. With Dustin O'Halloran he wrote Lion (2016), which earned an Oscar nomination. For Im Westen nichts Neues (2022) he received an Oscar and a BAFTA. Conclave (2024) was also nominated for an Oscar.

Listening

Listening tip. In Im Westen nichts Neues, listen to the harsh three-note motif that returns like a mechanical alarm, and in Conclave to the nervous, bowed strings.
