Ambient, drone and new modernism

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Ambient, drone and new modernism · After 2000 the focus in many film scores shifted from melody to sound and texture. Jonny Greenwood, guitarist of Radiohead, wrote string music with quarter tones and clusters for There Will Be Blood (2007). The Icelander Jóhann Jóhannsson built threatening, low drones for Sicario (2015) and used processed voices in Arrival (2016). Mica Levi gave Under the Skin (2013) sliding, out-of-tune strings. Hildur Guðnadóttir, also from Iceland, wrote part of the music for Joker (2019) before filming began, with her cello in the leading role, and won an Oscar for it. This movement borrows from ambient, drone and contemporary composed music.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice long, sustained sounds and slowly shifting colours instead of a melody.
