Hildur Guðnadóttir

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Hildur Guðnadóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1982 and is a cellist. She played in experimental bands and for years worked with Jóhann Jóhannsson, including on Sicario (2015). She then wrote Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) herself. Her cello, often electronically processed, is central to her music. For the series Chernobyl (2019) she used only sounds that she recorded in a decommissioned nuclear power plant in Lithuania, and transformed them into music. For Joker (2019) she wrote music before filming began, so that the actor Joaquin Phoenix could move to it. She won an Oscar for it. Tár (2022) also bears her stamp.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the cello that scrapes and creaks, and to sounds from the real world that are part of the music as rhythm and tone colour.
