Without Sinking

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Without Sinking is the second solo album by the Icelandic cellist and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. It was released in 2009 on the Touch label. Her previous record, Mount A from 2006, she had still released under the pseudonym Lost in Hildurness. Skúli Sverrisson, Jóhann Jóhannsson and her father Guðni Franzson play on this album. Valgeir Sigurðsson and Hildur herself mixed the recordings.

The ten tracks are calm and layered. Cello, zither, electronics and voice slide over one another. Pitchfork wrote that the tracks are as patient as they are graceful and that the voices move like tall grass in the wind. At the 2009 Kraumur Awards the album was among the six best records of the year. The magazine Fact placed it at number 32 on its list of the forty best albums of 2009.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Elevation, the opening track, and notice how the voices and the cello build up in layers. Try to hear where a new layer comes in.
