Jonny Greenwood

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jonny Greenwood was born in 1971 in Oxford and is the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist of the band Radiohead. He briefly studied music but was mostly self-taught, with a great interest in Messiaen and Penderecki. His first film score was for the documentary Bodysong (2003). For Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood (2007) he wrote string music with clusters and gliding tones, which makes the oil, the desert and the protagonist's obsession audible. With Anderson he also made The Master (2012) and Phantom Thread (2017). The latter, by contrast, sounds romantic, with piano and strings in the style of the 1950s. For Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog (2021) he had a cello plucked like a banjo.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the strings sliding as a single mass of sound, with clusters and glissandi instead of a clear melody.
