Mica Levi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mica Levi was born in Surrey in 1987 and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Levi first became known with the experimental pop band Micachu and the Shapes. The director Jonathan Glazer asked Levi to score Under the Skin (2013). The score consists of sliding, humming strings, with a short, recurring motif for the alien protagonist. Levi sought music that sounded strange and physical. For Jackie (2016) by Pablo Larraín, Levi wrote string music with slow glissandi that convey grief and distress; this earned an Oscar nomination. Again with Glazer came The Zone of Interest (2023), with strikingly little music: a dark overture and a closing piece.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the strings sliding between the notes: the unsteady pitch makes the music unsettling and physical.
