Max Richter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Max Richter was born in 1966 in Germany and grew up in England. He studied in London and in Florence with Luciano Berio. His style combines minimal music with electronics and a romantic, melancholy sound. The album The Blue Notebooks (2004) made him known, and the piece 'On the Nature of Daylight' from it turned up in numerous films, such as Arrival (2016). For the animated documentary ואלס עם באשיר (Waltz with Bashir) (2008) he wrote slow, desolate music about memories of war. The HBO series The Leftovers (2014) was given strings and piano that express grief and loss. For Ad Astra (2019) he combined synthesizers and orchestra. Long, slowly blossoming chords are his signature.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the long, slow string chords and how a simple harmonic sequence gains more and more weight through repetition.
