Zbigniew Preisner

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Zbigniew Preisner was born in Bielsko-Biała and lives and works in Kraków. He taught himself to compose by writing out music from records; at university he studied history and philosophy. From Bez końca (1985) he worked with the director Krzysztof Kieślowski, including on the TV series Dekalog (1988), La double vie de Véronique (1991) and the trilogy Trois couleurs (1993–1994). Preisner invented a non-existent Dutch composer from the eighteenth century, Van den Budenmayer. His music plays a role in the stories, as a piece that characters sing or search for. Preisner's sound is simple and solemn: long choral lines, solo voice, strings, piano and oboe. In Bleu a choral work on a Greek text from the Bible is the musical centre of the film.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the austere, solemn choral and solo voices and how a single melody sounds like 'old music' within the story itself.
