Requiem for My Friend
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Requiem for My Friend is the first work by Zbigniew Preisner that was not written for a film, and immediately a major one. He wrote it in memory of his late friend, the director Krzysztof Kieślowski, with whom he worked on several films, including the Three Colours trilogy. The album was released in 1998. Parts of the work were probably already finished when Kieślowski died in 1996. In an interview the composer said that the requiem had accompanied his friend on his last journey.
The work consists of two parts. The first, Requiem, has Latin sections such as Officium, Kyrie eleison, Dies irae, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Lux aeterna, Lacrimosa and Epitaphium. The second part, Życie, runs through Początek, Przeznaczenie and Apokalipsa to Postscriptum. Lacrimosa can later be heard in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life from 2011.
