Angelo Badalamenti

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Angelo Badalamenti was born in Brooklyn in 1937 into an Italian-American family. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music and wrote pop songs. On Blue Velvet (1986) he had to help the actress Isabella Rossellini with her singing. This was the start of a collaboration of more than thirty years with the director David Lynch. Lynch described an atmosphere and Badalamenti improvised on the keyboard until it felt right. This is how the sound of Twin Peaks (1990) came about: slow synthesizer chords, reverberating guitar, jazzy double bass and a sad melody that suddenly blossoms. With Lynch he also wrote songs for the singer Julee Cruise. Lost Highway (1997) and Mulholland Drive (2001) carry the same dreamlike, ominous sound. He died in 2022.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to how the music almost stands still: long synthesizer chords, a slow bass line, and then suddenly a melody that swells and sinks away again.
