Ry Cooder

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ry Cooder was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and was already playing the guitar at the age of three. He became known as a slide guitarist with a great interest in traditional music: blues, folk, gospel and music from other parts of the world. For the director Walter Hill he wrote, among others, the music for the western The Long Riders (1980), Southern Comfort (1981) and Crossroads (1986). His best-known score is Paris, Texas (1984) by Wim Wenders. Cooder based it on 'Dark Was the Night (Cold Was the Ground)' by the blues musician Blind Willie Johnson. In 1997 he produced the album Buena Vista Social Club with Cuban musicians. Wenders later made a documentary about it.
