Into the Purple Valley
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Into the Purple Valley is Ry Cooder's second studio album and was released in 1972. The record is rooted almost entirely in older American music. Cooder plays songs by Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie, but also calypso and gospel, such as F.D.R. in Trinidad and Denomination Blues. He plays guitar and mandolin and sings himself. Among the contributors are Van Dyke Parks on keyboards and Jim Keltner on drums.
The album mixes folk, blues and small bands in a warm, loose atmosphere. Teardrops Will Fall was a hit for Dickey Doo & the Don'ts in 1959, but Cooder himself knew the song from Wilson Pickett. Vigilante Man is by Woody Guthrie. Record Collector wrote that the record reached deep into the tradition and dug up forgotten treasures from the American past to reshape them for the post-Woodstock generation. The cover, too, with Cooder and his then wife in a Buick, appears on a Rolling Stone list.
