Calypso
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Calypso comes from Trinidad, where singers at carnival commented on politics and daily life with humour and mockery. From the 1930s calypso was recorded and became known in America as well. In 1948, on arriving in England aboard the ship Empire Windrush, Lord Kitchener sang London Is the Place for Me, which he recorded two years later. Calypso influenced the music of the entire Caribbean, including that of Jamaica.
Listening
Listening tip. In London Is the Place for Me, hear how the singing almost talks, with lyrics full of detail and a swinging band beneath.
