Steelpan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Steelpan · In Trinidad, African drums were banned at carnival in the 1880s. Revellers therefore struck bamboo sticks, and in the 1930s also tins, dustbins and car parts. In 1939, the first band to play only on metal paraded through Port of Spain. Boys such as Winston ‘Spree’ Simon discovered that a dented piece of metal gives different notes. Around 1947, Ellie Mannette and others made pans from oil drums, which lay everywhere after the war. In 1951, a steelband from Trinidad introduced the instrument in London. The steelband became the sound of carnival and calypso.
