Paradise and Lunch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Paradise and Lunch was released on 8 June 1974 and was Ry Cooder's fourth album. Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker produced it at the Warner Brothers studios. The record consists of covers of jazz, blues and roots, both well-known standards and obscure songs. Cooder plays guitar and mandolin and is assisted by, among others, Jim Keltner on drums and Plas Johnson on saxophone.

Striking is Tattler, Cooder's version of a song by the bluesman Washington Phillips, known above all for its guitar playing. Linda Ronstadt and David Soul later recorded it as well. In Jesus on the Mainline and It's All Over Now he draws on gospel and rhythm and blues. The closing track Ditty Wah Ditty is a duet with the jazz pianist Earl Hines. The album reached number 167 on the Billboard 200 and was later reissued, including in a remastered version in 2007.
