Air

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Air is a French duo from Versailles, formed in 1995 by Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Godin studied architecture, Dunckel mathematics. Their debut album Moon Safari (1998) brought a soft, electronic pop sound with Moog synthesizers, vocoder, Wurlitzer and Rhodes piano. For Sofia Coppola's first feature film, The Virgin Suicides (1999), Air wrote a complete score. It appeared in 2000 as an album in its own right. Brian Reitzell played drums, and in Playground Love Thomas Mars of Phoenix sings under the name Gordon Tracks. The album was nominated for a Brit Award for best soundtrack. Later Air contributed to Coppola's Lost in Translation (2003) and made an album for Le voyage dans la lune (2012).

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the slow, dreamy chords on Rhodes and synthesizer, the languid drums and the saxophone, which evoke the bored summer of the film.
