Brian Reitzell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Brian Reitzell is an American musician, composer, producer and music supervisor, born in 1965. He began as the drummer of the Los Angeles punk band Redd Kross. Later he became best known for his work for film and television, in which he not only writes music but also chooses and brings together existing songs.

Music and breakthrough

His name is closely linked with the director Sofia Coppola, for whom he worked on The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette and The Bling Ring. For the score of Lost in Translation he received a BAFTA nomination in 2003 together with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. He also collaborated often with the French duo Air: he played drums on The Virgin Suicides and 10 000 Hz Legend and toured with them in 1998, 2000 and 2001. He also made music for 30 Days of Night in 2007, the television series Boss, Hannibal and American Gods and the games Red Faction: Armageddon and Watch Dogs. In 2014 his first solo album, Auto Music, was released.

Influence

Reitzell shows how atmosphere in visual media can be built from layers of guitar, electronics and sound, often close to pop music. He is one of the makers who tie pop taste and film music together.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to an excerpt from the Hannibal soundtrack and notice how the music creates more atmosphere and tension than melody. Try to hear which sounds you do not immediately recognise as an instrument.
