Moon Safari

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Moon Safari is the debut of the French electronic duo Air, released in January 1998 by Source and Virgin Records. The album received wide praise on release. Alexis Petridis wrote in Mixmag that it creates a sound world of its own, glossier and chicer than reality. Other critics mentioned its sense of melody, its relaxed attitude and the bold use of the vocoder.

They praised above all the pop songs Sexy Boy and Kelly Watch the Stars, alongside more experimental work. The Face and Select chose it as album of the year. Moon Safari is regarded as the record that set the stage for the emerging downtempo, and anniversary editions appeared in 2008 and 2024.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sexy Boy. Notice the vocoder voice and how relaxed the melody stays, even when the sound is tight and electronic.
