Disasterpeace (Rich Vreeland)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Disasterpeace (Rich Vreeland) · Disasterpeace is the stage name of Richard Vreeland, from Staten Island in New York. He learned to play the guitar at high school and began composing around the age of seventeen. His stepfather, a trained musician and church musician, was an important influence. He first became known through game music. For Fez (2012) he used soft synthesizer sounds and reverb to get closer to the synthesizer sound of the 1980s, with effects such as bitcrushing and distortion. His music for Hyper Light Drifter (2016) also received a great deal of attention. In film he broke through with the horror film It Follows (2014) by David Robert Mitchell. Later came Under the Silver Lake (2018), Triple Frontier (2019) and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021), among others.

Listening

Listening tip. In It Follows, listen to the harsh, distorted synthesizer chords and the menacing bass pulses, which recall the horror scores of John Carpenter.
