Western orchestral and indie game music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Western orchestral and indie game music · From 2001, Western games were given scores that could rival film. Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori opened Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) with a male choir in Gregorian style, followed by strings and rock drums. For Journey (2012), Austin Wintory wrote a score in which a solo cello follows the player and grows along with the journey; it was the first game score to receive a Grammy nomination. In The Last of Us (2013), Gustavo Santaolalla brought his sober guitar style to a game. For the indie game Celeste (2018), Lena Raine made electronic music with piano. In God of War (2018), Bear McCreary used Nordic colours and a heavy choir. In games, music often responds directly to what the player does.
