Bear McCreary

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Bear McCreary (born in 1979) studied at the University of Southern California and learned his craft from Elmer Bernstein. For the series Battlestar Galactica (2004) he avoided the usual science-fiction orchestra. He chose taiko drums, the Armenian duduk and other non-Western instruments. That made the series rawer and more human. The Walking Dead (2010) and Outlander (2014) followed, for which he arranged the Scottish folk song The Skye Boat Song, sung by his wife Raya Yarbrough. For the game God of War (2018) he wrote a dark, Norse-tinged score with a heavy male chorus. McCreary shows how television and game music have moved closer to film.
