Armenian duduk
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Armenian duduk · The duduk is a double-reed wind instrument made of apricot wood. In Armenia it is also called tsiranapogh, apricot pipe. The reed is strikingly large, which gives the warm, slightly husky sound. Usually two duduks play together: one plays the melody, while the other, using circular breathing, sustains a held note, the dam. How old the instrument is is a matter of debate, but it is certainly centuries old. Djivan Gasparyan brought the duduk as far as Hollywood, including in Gladiator.
Listening
Listening tip. Djivan Gasparyan plays here with two accompanists. First listen to the bottom layer: can you hear the dam, the unbroken held note? How does the melody move above it?
