Gustavo Santaolalla

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Gustavo Santaolalla (born in 1951 in Argentina) began in the 1960s with the rock group Arco Iris and later became an influential producer of rock en español. His film work began with Alejandro González Iñárritu's Amores perros (2000). His music is sparse: a few notes on guitar or on the ronroco, a small Andean stringed instrument, with plenty of space and silence. For Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Babel (2006) he won an Oscar two years running. For the game The Last of Us (2013) he used the same bare, acoustic sound, and that also took him to the television series. He proves that few notes can carry a great deal of emotion.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the acoustic guitar or ronroco, the long silences between the phrases and the reverb that makes the instrument sound lonely.
