Babel

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

With Babel, Mumford & Sons released the follow-up to Sigh No More, which had made them internationally famous in 2009, on 21 September 2012. Markus Dravs produced again, and the album was released on Island Records. The band had been playing new songs live since late 2010, including Broken Crown and Below My Feet. They decided not to change their sound, but did take the time to refine it. Not With Haste is a rewritten version of Learn Me Right, which they recorded with Birdy for the film Brave. I Will Wait was the first single.

The reviews were mostly positive. Mojo thought it was more than a solid nu-folk album and also called it a good pop album. Babel went straight to number one in both Britain and the United States and was the fastest-selling album of the British year in 2012. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Listening tip. Listen to I Will Wait and notice how little the band has changed its sound since Sigh No More, and where you still hear something new.
