Indiefolk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Indiefolk · Around 2008 young musicians brought back acoustic folk, with the approach of indie rock: recording and releasing it themselves on small record labels. On their 2008 debut, Fleet Foxes of Seattle sang in several parts like a choir. Bon Iver recorded his first album in a hunting cabin in Wisconsin, and Mumford & Sons of London made the banjo and the mandolin popular at big festivals. The songs often begin softly and grow into an exuberant ending.

Listening

Listening tip. In White Winter Hymnal, listen to how the voices come in with the same line one after another, like a canon, while the drums grow steadily fuller.
