Indie pop and shoegaze

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Indie pop and shoegaze · From the late 1970s small British labels such as Rough Trade and Creation released guitar music outside the big record companies: indie, short for independent. In 1986 the music paper NME put together a cassette of young bands, C86, which gave its name to the sweet indie pop. Around 1990 shoegaze emerged: bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive built walls of distorted, floating guitars, and on stage looked mostly at their effects pedals, at their shoes.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Only Shallow for the way the guitars become one undulating cloud of sound, with the vocals half hidden in it.
