Alternative rock
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Alternative rock · Alongside the stadiums, a rock world of small labels, clubs and university radio grew up in the 1980s: alternative rock, in America college rock. Fewer virtuoso solos, a less polished production and original songs. R.E.M. from Athens, Georgia, became big through university radio; U2 from Dublin grew into a stadium band.
