Grunge
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Grunge · In the late 1980s, around the small label Sub Pop in Seattle, a scene emerged that mixed punk and heavy metal into a raw, heavy sound. In January 1992 Nirvana's Nevermind knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the top of the American album chart. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden also came from Seattle.
Listening
Listening tip. In Smells Like Teen Spirit, listen for the quiet-loud dynamics: soft verses and loud choruses on four power chords.
