Nevermind
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
In 1990, Nirvana was already recording songs with producer Butch Vig in Madison, Wisconsin, intended for the label Sub Pop. Then drummer Chad Channing left and Dave Grohl joined. The band signed with DGC Records and insisted on Vig as producer. In May and June 1991 they recorded Nevermind at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, with a budget of 65,000 dollars. It sounded more polished and more radio-friendly than earlier work.
Kurt Cobain wrote most of the songs. The lyrics are about alienation, frustration, anti-establishment ideas, feminist views and relationship problems. Musically the album mixes grunge and alternative rock with acoustic ballads and hard rock with punk influences. Smells Like Teen Spirit was the first single, followed by Come as You Are, Lithium and In Bloom. The album was an unexpected success and brought grunge and alternative rock to a large audience. Critics chose it as the best album of the year in the Pazz & Jop poll.
