From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dave Grohl · David Eric Grohl was born in 1969 in Warren, Ohio, and grew up in Springfield, Virginia. His parents separated when he was seven. He taught himself to play guitar and, at thirteen, in Chicago, fell under the spell of punk. At first he listened to music that was harder, faster and darker, while his sister listened to new wave. In 1986, at seventeen, he joined the punk band Scream as drummer. When that group broke up in 1990, he became the drummer of Nirvana, with whom he became famous. He first played on Nevermind in 1991.

Music and breakthrough

After Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, Nirvana ceased to exist. Grohl founded Foo Fighters as a one-man project. The album Foo Fighters appeared in 1995. He then put together a full band, and twelve studio albums have appeared since. He is also the drummer and a co-founder of the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and has played with Queens of the Stone Age and Tenacious D. His side projects are Late!, with the album Pocketwatch, and Probot.

Influence

From 1997 Grohl directed the Foo Fighters' videos, and he made the documentaries Sound City in 2013, the series Sonic Highways in 2014 and What Drives Us in 2021. In 2021 his autobiography The Storyteller appeared. In 2014 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Nirvana and in 2021 with Foo Fighters. In 2016 Rolling Stone placed him twenty-seventh among the greatest drummers of all time.
