In Utero

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In Utero · After the polished Nevermind, the band wanted a rawer sound and therefore chose Steve Albini as engineer. In February 1993 they worked for two weeks at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, in a remote house in the snow. The sessions went quickly. Albini placed about thirty microphones around the drums, and recorded some parts in a kitchen for the natural reverb. Kurt Cobain called it the easiest recording ever.

Afterwards disagreement arose: people at the label found the sound unusable, and the band had doubts about the bass and the vocals. Albini refused to remix. Bob Ludwig mastered the record, and Scott Litt remixed the singles All Apologies, Heart-Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea. In Utero topped the American and British charts. Critics praised the lyrics and the raw, idiosyncratic sound. It was the last studio album before Cobain's death.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Heart-Shaped Box and notice the difference between the restrained verses and the raw, loud chorus.
