Fleet Foxes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Fleet Foxes is an American indie folk and folk rock band from Seattle, formed in 2006. Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset, two friends from the same high school in Kirkland, began making music together out of admiration for Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson. At first the band was called The Pineapples. The name Fleet Foxes came after it turned out that another local group had the same name. Pecknold became the main songwriter and singer, Skjelset played lead guitar. Later Casey Wescott, Christian Wargo and Morgan Henderson, among others, joined.

Music and breakthrough

Producer Phil Ek helped them with a first demo in 2006. After the EP Sun Giant, the debut album Fleet Foxes was released on Sub Pop in 2008, with White Winter Hymnal. The album received rave reviews and was well received in Europe. In 2011 came Helplessness Blues, their greatest commercial success, which reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. After a three-year break came Crack-Up in 2017 and Shore in 2020.

Influence

The band's sound centres on rich harmony singing and refined instrumentation, with acoustic guitars, mandolin, keyboards and plenty of reverb. The style is inspired by the pop music of the late 1960s. In the 2000s Fleet Foxes showed that folk could once again reach a large indie audience, and it contributed to the revival of harmonic folk pop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to White Winter Hymnal and count how many voices are singing at once. Notice how the singing passes the melody around and how few instruments are needed.
