Fleet Foxes
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Fleet Foxes · The band formed in 2006 in Seattle around the singer and writer Robin Pecknold and guitarist Skyler Skjelset. In 2007 they began recording, in the basement of Pecknold's parents and at keyboard player Casey Wescott's home. Producer Phil Ek guided the work, which took a year and was paid for by the group themselves. The band members recorded their parts between their day jobs and set up their guitar amplifiers in tepees. The album was already finished, but it was completely rewritten and re-recorded. In November 2007 it was done.
The sound blends folk, gospel, psychedelic pop and Sacred Harp, with an emphasis on group singing and unusual song structures. Pecknold described the mood as ignorant nostalgia, and drew inspiration from Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. White Winter Hymnal is about friends who dropped him in high school. Critics praised the album lavishly and counted it among the best debut albums ever.
