Wilder Mind

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wilder Mind · At the end of 2013, the members of Mumford & Sons were thinking of a long break, but after five months they were back at work. They wrote and recorded demos in the garage of Aaron Dessner of The National in Brooklyn and at Eastcote Studios in London. They recorded the album itself at AIR Studios with producer James Ford, who also occasionally sat behind the drums.

After two albums with Markus Dravs, the band left behind its characteristic acoustic instruments, such as the banjo and the double bass. Electric guitars and a session drummer took their place. Critics heard indie rock and electric, guitar-driven stadium rock. In 2015 the album went straight to number one in its first week in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Believe and notice which instruments you hear: what is left of the banjo and the double bass of the earlier albums?
