Toby Fox

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Toby Fox was born in 1991 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He taught himself to compose and from 2010 contributed to the music of the webcomic Homestuck. He made his game Undertale (2015) almost on his own, with the artist Temmie Chang. He raised the money through Kickstarter. He made all the music in the program FL Studio. As an important influence he names the Japanese Mother series, especially EarthBound. The score is known for its leitmotifs: characters' themes keep returning, and in 'Hopes and Dreams' almost all of them sound. He had already used 'Megalovania' earlier in Homestuck and in a self-made modification of EarthBound. Since 2018 the sequel Deltarune has been appearing in chapters.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the leitmotifs: short melodies that return at a different tempo or in a different tone colour, and the sound of old game consoles alongside modern electronics.
