Austin Wintory

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Austin Wintory (born 1984) studied at the University of Southern California. He became known with the games of thatgamecompany, first flOw (2006) and then Journey (2012). In Journey the player travels through a desert without words. The solo cello is the voice of the player, and the music grows along with the journey, from a quiet beginning to a grand ending. The score was the first game soundtrack to be nominated for a Grammy. For The Banner Saga (2014) Wintory wrote a sober, Nordic-sounding score for wind ensemble and voices. He shows that game music can tell a story without text.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the solo cello and how a simple motif returns more and more often and more fully, with more instruments as the journey goes on.
