Mick Gordon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mick Gordon comes from Mackay in Queensland, Australia. As a teenager he played jazz and blues on guitar. In the games world he began as a sound designer at Pandemic Studios. After Need for Speed: Shift (2009) and Killer Instinct (2013) he wrote the music for Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014). For Doom (2016), id Software at first asked him not to use guitars or metal. Gordon sent low sine tones through chains of effects units and mixed them with white noise. Later he was allowed to use guitar after all: a nine-string guitar, together with the sound of the chainsaw from the original Doom. The score won the award for Best Music at The Game Awards in 2016. After Doom Eternal (2020) he fell into a public dispute with id Software.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to how heavy, distorted synthesizers and the low nine-string guitar together form a rhythmic wall of sound, in which sound design and melody merge.
