Wall of Sound
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology
At Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, the producer Phil Spector had several guitarists, pianists and drummers play the same part at the same time, and sent the sound through an echo chamber. In this way, all the instruments melted into a single thick wall of sound, the Wall of Sound. It was made to sound overwhelming even from a small radio. Spector treated the studio not as a place to capture a band but as an instrument in itself. Girl groups such as The Ronettes were given their grand sound this way, and later Bruce Springsteen built on it.
