The studio as instrument

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

The studio as instrument · In 1966, the Beatles stopped performing and began to work mainly in the studio. With the producer George Martin and EMI engineers, they used tape loops, tape played backwards, varied tape speed and ADT, a trick with which a second tape recorder automatically doubles a voice. In Los Angeles, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys built Pet Sounds with studio musicians. A record was no longer an account of a performance, but a work that could only exist in the studio. Psychedelic rock and art rock grew out of this.
