Brill Building and girl groups
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Brill Building and girl groups · In the late 1950s young songwriting duos worked in small rooms with a piano in and around the Brill Building on Broadway, such as Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and wrote about what concerned teenagers. Will You Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles became the first number 1 by a Black girl group in 1961. Many of those songs ended up with the producer Phil Spector. He recorded them at the Gold Star studio in Los Angeles and piled up guitars, pianos, horns and strings into one dense wall of sound: the Wall of Sound, heard in Be My Baby by The Ronettes (1963).
Listening
Listening tip. In Be My Baby, hear the Wall of Sound: instruments playing double and triple, in a lot of reverb.
