Transistor radio

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Transistor radio · The Regency TR-1 of 1954 was the first transistor radio to reach the shops. Transistors replaced the large radio valves, so that a radio fitted in your coat pocket and ran on batteries. Teenagers could now listen to their own music out of their parents' sight: on the beach, on the street, in their bedroom. Producers tuned their records to that tiny speaker. At Motown, mixes were checked on cheap speakers, and Phil Spector built a sound that sounded full even through a tiny radio.
