Nicholas Britell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Nicholas Britell was born in New York in 1980. He received classical piano training at the Juilliard pre-college programme, studied at Harvard and played there in an instrumental hip hop group. Those two worlds come together in his music. For Barry Jenkins's Moonlight (2016) he applied a hip hop technique, slowing down and lowering the pitch of a recording, to classical string music. In If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) he wrote lush strings and horns for a love story in Harlem. The title music of Succession (2018) sets classical piano and strings on a heavy hip hop beat and won an Emmy. For the Star Wars series Andor (2022) he designed a new sound world of his own.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the slowed, lowered string sound in Moonlight: a hip hop technique that makes classical music dreamy and heavy.
