Randy Newman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Randy Newman (born in 1943) comes from a family of film composers: his uncles Alfred, Lionel and Emil Newman all worked in Hollywood. He himself first became known as a singer-songwriter with ironic songs. He wrote his first film score as early as Cold Turkey (1971), but only with Ragtime (1981) did he break through as a film composer. For The Natural (1984) he made a heroic score with brass in the style of Copland. With Toy Story (1995) began his long collaboration with Pixar. The song You've Got a Friend in Me sounds like a relaxed piano song from the American South. He won two Oscars for best song. For Marriage Story (2019) he wrote, by contrast, small, intimate music.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the warm Americana sound: brass in broad chords, or a piano with ragtime and blues influences beneath a simple vocal line.
