Sail Away

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sail Away is Randy Newman's third studio album and was released on 23 May 1972 on Reprise Records. Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman produced it. He wrote all the songs himself, but some had already been recorded by others, such as Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear, a British hit for Alan Price in 1967. He re-recorded Last Night I Had a Dream with a clearly different arrangement from the one on his 1968 single. In 2002 Rhino issued a reissue with bonus tracks.

The record has had a lasting influence. Rolling Stone placed it at number 268 among the greatest albums of all time. Brian Wilson said that he played the record over and over in a difficult period. Burn On, about the 1969 fire on the Cuyahoga River, plays over the opening titles of the film Major League, and You Can Leave Your Hat On later became famous in versions by Joe Cocker and Tom Jones.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Burn On and notice the mood of the song, which is about the river in Cleveland that caught fire in 1969.
