Born Again

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Born Again is Randy Newman's sixth studio album and was released in August 1979. On the cover he sits in an office with make-up on his face, an obvious parody of Kiss, and dollar signs over his eyes: a joke about the commercialisation of rock music. He wrote and arranged all the songs himself.

Before its release Newman called the record a greater insult than his hit Short People and expected the album to catch on. It did not: sales were disappointing and the reviews were mixed. Later he said he had forgotten that people first need to know who you are. Rolling Stone found the tone snide and nihilistic. The New York Times, by contrast, heard a trace of anger that keeps the songs from sounding cheap. He himself called it the strangest record he ever made.

Listening tip. Listen to It's Money That I Love and notice how the title immediately points to the theme of the cover: money and commerce.
