Thunderball

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Thunderball is the soundtrack album for the fourth James Bond film. John Barry wrote and conducted the music, and it was his third Bond score. United Artists released the album in 1965. Recording was still under way when the record had to be released, so the LP contained only twelve pieces from the first part of the film. The reason was a late change: the planned title song Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang by Barry and Leslie Bricusse was scrapped, because the studio wanted the song to name the title of the film.

The composer wrote Thunderball in a hurry with lyricist Don Black. Tom Jones sang it and, according to the stories, fainted after the high final note. Parts of the old melody remained in the score, for example in Cafe Martinique and as a bongo cha-cha-cha in Death of Fiona. The underwater motif from Search for Vulcan also runs through the film. An expanded CD edition followed in 2003.
